6th Grade Earth Science Syllabus
Course Title: Earth Science Room: E115

Replacement Cost: $70.75
Lost/Damaged Textbook Policy
Students are financially responsible for all books issued by SSCMS. Textbooks may not be left in classrooms and teachers are not responsible for the whereabouts of your book. The copy which was issued to the student must be turned in at the end of the course. Students will not receive credit for turning in another student’s book and may not turn in replacement books. The cost of replacement will be assessed to any student that fails to turn in the book they were issued or turns in a damaged book. If the student is issued a damaged book such as broken binding, torn pages, water damage, writing, etc., and then the book should be returned for a replacement or document the damage. There is a two week grace period for students to document damage before they are held accountable.
Course Description
The Sixth Grade curriculum provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills in Earth Science. The course is designed to provide students with an overview of the common concepts in Earth Science including but not limited to; meteorology, geology, astronomy, hydrology, the impact of humans on the earth, resources utilization and conservation. These concepts are investigated through observing, collecting, summarizing and analyzing. The students replicate investigations and compare results to find more than one way to interpret their findings. They also replicate investigations and compare results to find similarities and differences. One Major Class Project will be assigned each semester.
Lab Safety and Contract
Students are expected to work collaboratively and in accordance with the lab safety rules. Every student must have a lab safety contract filled out annually by his or her parent or guardian. Students violating one or more of the lab safety rules will be removed from the activity to ensure the safety of all the students. These violations may result in alternate assignments and discipline consequences by the teacher.

Scientific Inquiry Process
Rock (Cycle, Minerals, Types, Fossils)
Geology (Earth Layers, Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes, Volcanoes)
Hydrology (study of the effects of water – weathering, erosion, deposition)
Oceanography (study of the oceans, ocean floor, water cycle)
Second Semester: Meteorology (study of the atmosphere, climate & weather)
Evolution of the Universe – The “Big Bang Theory”
Astronomy (study of the Universe, Solar System, Planets)
Resources Utilization (Conservation/Recycling, Renewable/Non-Renewable)
Grading Scale
The Student’s final grade will consist of the following components:
Tests/ Performance Assessments/ Major Projects 35% A – 90% and above
Classwork/Notebook Checks / Labs 30% B – 80% - 89%
Quizzes/Minor Projects 25% C – 70% - 79%
Homework 10% F – 69% and below
*According to the state, grades below a 70% are considered a failing grade.
**Accommodations and modifications will be made according to the individual needs of students and in accordance with the I.E.P.
Homework Expectations
Homework is a component of the education process. When given, it is used as reinforcement to the daily lessons. When homework is assigned it is expected to be done with effort so the student is receiving the benefits of the assignment. All homework assignments should be recorded in the student’s agenda daily. If there is no homework the student is expected to write “NO HW”.
Make-Up Work
Students with excused absences may make up any assignments missed while they were absent. The student is responsible for retrieving the work they missed while they were absent. They will have the same time to make up the work as they were absent. Late work will receive a reduced grade.
Late Work
Late work is always accepted but with a grade reduction for everyday it is late after the first day. ALL students are encouraged to turn in any work that they did not complete even with deductions.
Academic Dishonesty
If a student is cheating, the student’s work will be collected and a zero will be given for the assignment. The student’s parent will be notified as well. There is a zero tolerance for cheating of any kind.
Fulton County Provision for Improving Grades/ Recovery Policy
Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance.
Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.
Classroom Expectations
Students are to follow the classroom expectations posted in the classroom. This includes coming to class on time and sitting in their assigned seat and not getting up from their seats without permission. Students need to come to class prepared with all classroom materials including; pencil, paper, organized binder with all work and any other materials specified. Lastly, disrespect to anyone will not be tolerated.

Ms. Reiman's: Tuesday afternoons until 5:00 or by appointment in E-115. Please arrange for transportation home.
